NAMIC Newsflash
Record Attendance at the 2008 NAMIC Conference
"Best Conference Ever”
Those words were frequently uttered during the 22nd Annual NAMIC Conference held September 14-16, 2008 at the New York Marriott Marquis. With nearly 850 professionals in attendance, this year’s conference, themed Diversity: Pipeline to Innovation, was NAMIC’s largest as we closed out a 22-year tradition of hosting the Annual NAMIC Conference in New York City during Cable Diversity Week.
With our country experiencing such tough economic times, we are overwhelmed by the industry support that has led to the success of this year’s NAMIC Conference. The enthusiasm demonstrated by our supporters, both financially and via attendance, coupled with the evolving composition of our audience, is indicative of the industry's commitment to diversity as a business priority.
More than 100 speakers contributed to the three-day event, which was marked by standing-room only crowds at conference sessions focused on Corporate Diversity and Inclusion, Digital Media, Leadership Development and the first-ever Ad Sales track.
Over 750 job seekers were matched up with 40 exhibitors from leading media and entertainment companies during the annual Diversity in Communications Career Expo. The Annual NAMIC Conference also featured a two-day Writers’ Workshop, led by veteran TV executive and producer Carole Kirschner. Additionally, excellent networking opportunities were presented via exclusive receptions hosted by Scripps Networks, TV One, Uptown Magazine and NAMIC-New York.
For an in-depth, behind-the-scenes look at the 22nd Annual NAMIC Conference, visit the NAMIC Conference Blog at http://annualnamicconference.blogspot.com/.
Save the date for the 23rd Annual NAMIC Conference, which is scheduled for October 26-28, 2009 in Denver, CO as part of Cable Connection-Fall.
Below are highlights from this year's conference.

Membership Spotlight

How long have you been a NAMIC member?
I have been a member of NAMIC since I entered the cable industry in 1990.
Why did you decide to join NAMIC?
Joining NAMIC was a logical step to take. Throughout my career being a member of professional organizations, relevant to my craft, has played a key role in my overall development and growth. So, I think getting active in NAMIC was an obvious part of my professional DNA.
What is the most valuable benefit of being a NAMIC member?
Being a NAMIC member has proven to be extremely valuable to me. It has allowed me the opportunity to play an integral role in creating and executing events on both a local and national level. Many of my creative ideas for panels, screening events and other activities that I believe have been important to the industry, have materialized because of my involvement in NAMIC. It has allowed me to network with senior-level executives that I may not have otherwise had the opportunity to meet. It has allowed me to promote the importance of diversity in our industry. I have developed many valuable and meaningful relationships with my colleagues in the industry because of NAMIC. One more important benefit is that I am a graduate of NAMIC’s Executive Leadership Development Program (ELDP) – Class IV. What an incredible and invaluable experience that was. And, the list really could go on.
How are you involved with/engaged in NAMIC?
I am currently serving my second term as the President of NAMIC-Denver.
Tell us a little about your position at Starz?
At Starz Entertainment, I serve as Vice President of Programming Publicity. I lead a team of qualified professionals who are responsible for promoting the various programming and platforms at Starz.
What lead you to seek a career in the communications industry?
I knew early on that I wanted to be in the broadcast industry. Initially, I pursued a career in broadcast journalism but shortly found my way to cable. It’s been quite rewarding and I am extremely proud and excited to be a part of this dynamic industry.
How has the industry evolved since you entered it?
The industry has grown exponentially, particularly in the different ways that we receive programming. It’s not just on television anymore, but rather on mobile devices and computers. And with on-demand, we can watch our favorite shows, whenever we want. It’s ever-changing and that’s what I find fascinating about our business. There is always something new right around the corner. It allows so much opportunity for creativity.
What’s the one thing about you that’s not on your resume that you are willing to share with other members of NAMIC?
My eggplant parmesan is quite exquisite.
