President’s Message

Kathy Johnson

Dear NAMIC Members:

This year, NAMIC will be entering into a whole new dimension of educational programming as we provide our membership with e-learning experiences through the expansion of our interactive webinar series and the launch of the NAMIC Video Channel.

Many of you participated in our 2007 webinars - The Top 10 Things You Need to Know about Digital Media and The Myth of Mentoring. Based upon your enthusiastic response, and with support from the Walter Kaitz Foundation, we're doubling up on our webinars and will offer a series of four that explore a variety of professional development topics and career trends.

In Spring 2008, we'll launch the NAMIC Video Channel (NVC), an on-line diversity network made possible by a grant from the Motorola Foundation. The NVC will comprise a main NAMIC channel plus a series of Chapter sub-channels that will permit the uploading of member-generated content. NAMIC has contracted with New York-based Ember Media to build and maintain the NVC infrastructure and to guarantee general and password access to educational content, video and Webinar archives, blogs, and social networking communities.

The NVC will kick-off with a competition in which the NAMIC Chapters will vie to create and videotape the best new media-focused event. Each chapter will be provided with a digital video camera and will upload their entries onto the NVC for judging by NAMIC members. Motorola will join NAMIC at the Annual NAMIC Conference in New York City in September to recognize the winners.

As we work to enhance your membership with these virtual experiences, we hope that you will also attend the exceptional programs and networking events hosted by our chapter network . The Chapters In Action section of this edition of InTouch features an exciting recap of local activity. Additionally, you won't want to miss out on the upcoming 2008 events and programs listed in the NAMIC Calendar.

Should you have questions about any events or educational offerings featured in this issue of InTouch, please contact the NAMIC national headquarters at (212) 594-5985 or email us at info@namic.com.

We look forward to providing more opportunities for our members to be InTouch this year.

Career Corner

Participate in NAMIC's L. Patrick Mellon Mentorship Mentorship Program

NAMIC has now launched its new Regional Mentorship Program in two markets: Southern California and Mid-Atlantic. The program was designed to customize the mentoring experience to the unique characteristics of a given launch city; e.g. mix of MSO’s and programmers; the demographics of the local NAMIC member base; and the comparative viability of the L. Patrick Mellon Program model given the mix of these and other variables. Currently, we are in the early planning stages of implementing the alternative mentoring model in Denver, Chicago, and the Carolinas, targeting second quarter start times in these three markets.

2008 marks the 15th anniversary year of the L. Patrick Mellon Mentorship Program. Chapters are encouraged to be mindful of this milestone in their planning of mandated mentoring events and the occasion will be celebrated in September during the Mentoring Luncheon at the 22nd Annual NAMIC Conference in New York City.

NAMIC is currently recruiting mentors and mentees for the first cycle in 2008 of the L. Patrick Mellon Mentorship Program. The goal of the program is to facilitate diversity in the communications industry by pairing NAMIC members with professional mentors who will assist them with their career advancement strategies.

To learn more about the L. Patrick Mellon Mentorship Program, please visit our website by clicking here. If you have questions, please contact Jim Jones, director of education, at (212) 594-5985 or via e-mail at jim.jones@namic.com.

"I highly encourage senior-level executives to participate in this program as mentors. It is very rewarding to work with someone who is at the turning point in their career. It’s such a small investment of time for such a great payback. There is much to learn from a mentoring relationship no matter what level you are in your career."

- Albert Cheng, Executive Vice President, Digital Media, Disney ABC Television Group, The Walt Disney Company

Member of the Month: Lynda Mauze

Lynda Mauze
NAMIC-New York
Network Commercial Manager
CBS Network
New York, NY

How long have you been a NAMIC member and why did you join?
I joined NAMIC-New York in 2003. I became actively involved in 2005, when I joined the Membership Committee. It was then that I was able to fully recognize the vast resources and benefits that NAMIC brings to my professional life.

How are you involved/engaged in NAMIC?
Since 2005, I have been actively engaged in NAMIC-New York. My first role was co-chair for the membership committee. In 2006, I moved on to a co-chair position with the programming committee for two years. I am excited about the opportunity to co-chair the communications committee in 2008.

Tell us a little about your position at CBS?
Currently, my position at CBS Network entails directly supervising and controlling the receipt, coding and disposition of all commercials, promos and public service announcements for CBS TV, CWTV and CBS Worldwide. My day-to day functions are diverse and multi-faceted. I operate as a liaison between CBS Network Sales, Commercial Clearance department, outside clients, advertising agencies and the Director of Broadcast Control.

Describe briefly your experience with the L. Patrick Mentorship Program and how it has helped you in your career?
At the very first meeting with my mentor, I left her office more inspired and driven about my professional goals and aspirations. This first meeting set the precedent for what would be our mentor-mentee relationship. My mentor made it clear from the onset that her primary interest was to provide guidance on my professional path to career success. She supported my professional goals and provided the forum for me to succeed in perfecting my career objectives.

Would you recommend the program? If so, why?
I would wholeheartedly recommend the L. Patrick Mellon Mentorship Program to anyone who aspires to connect with a thriving professional relevant to the industry. They will engage in a once-in-a-lifetime experience and will be that much better professionally for having obtained the knowledge of what it takes to be a successful person. This is also beneficial in your personal life.

What's the one thing about you that’s not on your resume that you are willing to share with other members of NAMIC?
I studied acting for a number of years. I believed for the longest time that being an actress was my calling. I have learned to appreciate that the skills I learned in theater can translate to life.
