President's Message
Dear NAMIC Members:
NAMIC is pleased to announce that nominations are now being accepting for Class VIII of the NAMIC Executive Leadership Development Program (ELDP).
ELDP is directed at upper-middle level executives of color whose performance and potential point them toward more senior executive positions with broader responsibilities and scope. The University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) Anderson Graduate School of Management, one of the nation’s foremost business schools, is NAMIC’s academic partner in ELDP. At NAMIC’s request, UCLA’s Office of Executive Education developed ELDP to focus on the professional development needs of executives of color in the communications industry. Anderson is a pioneer in the area of executive development programs directed at specific culture groups.
The ideal candidate for ELDP has been at the director level or above for at least two years and is a superior performer aspiring to a senior-level executive position within the industry. ELDP is unique to other leadership development programs in the industry as it was created for both men and women of color. The program was designed to help alleviate some of the industry’s most persistent challenges: increasing the diversity of the executive suites; retention of people of color; and maximizing the ROI of a diverse workforce in a competitive global economy.
The deadline for ELDP applications is Friday, July 25, 2008. I encourage you to visit the ELDP webpage to access the ELDP application and brochure. You may also contact Jim Jones, vice president of education programs, at jim.jones@namic.com or at 212-594-5985, with any questions.

Membership Spotlight
Member of the Month: Lynnette Smith
Lynnette Smith
NAMIC-Atlanta President
Manager, Specialized Advertising
The Weather Channel
How long have you been a NAMIC member?
I have been a member of NAMIC since 2003.
Why did you decide to join NAMIC?
I decided to join NAMIC because I wanted to be a part of an industry organization that has a diverse group of people. I like the fact that we have men and women as well as people from all ethnicities.
What is the most valuable benefit of being a NAMIC member?
The networking opportunities have proven to be the most valuable benefit from my membership. I have an array of peers and industry leaders who are always willing and available to mentor, coach and help me with my career and professional development.
Tell us a little about your position at The Weather Channel?
As the manager of specialized advertising, I am responsible for the overall management, development and operational support of the TWC Media Solutions MarketSmart Programs for the ad sales team and their clients’ advertising campaigns. This includes managing the integrity of on-air products to ensure that client requirements are met and there is no loss of revenue to the organization. It also includes managing the training for the sales teams to ensure there is compliance with internal processes and the day-to-day operations for the operational support teams to create, document and implement processes as it relates to media solutions groups.
What lead you to seek a career in the communications industry?
After working in advertising on the print media side for 15 years, I wanted to expand my knowledge in TV, cable and online. I searched for a company that would allow me to learn both areas and discovered The Weather Channel.
How has the industry evolved since you entered it?
The technology within the industry has evolved so much in just a few short years. In 2000 an advertiser had two to three basic platforms to advertise their products. Now their advertising dollars are split amongst cable, TV, radio, newspaper, web and mobile just to name a few.
What’s the one thing about you that’s not on your resume that you are willing to share with other members of NAMIC?
I am a 2002 graduate of The Atlanta Broadcast Institute and want to work in radio as my retirement job.
