Kathy JohnsonObservations

Thank you for participating in NAMIC's recent membership survey.  We truly appreciate your feedback as we develop programs and initiatives to optimize your investment in NAMIC.

You told us that your most pressing concerns were:

  • Advancement opportunities
  • Diversity and inclusion in the workplace
  • Leadership development
  • Staying relevant and reinventing oneself, especially in a challenging economy
  • More professional development programs for junior-level people

While we do not presume to be psychic, NAMIC has new programs in the pipeline that will address some of these issues.  This Fall, we will expand the eligibility for participation in our executive coaching offerings beyond the alumni of our Executive Leadership Development Program (ELDP) with the launch of a brand-new executive coaching program for all of our Platinum-level members.

Additionally, we will partner with an industry company to pilot, "Maximizing Multicultural Teams," a one-day workshop targeted to everyone who recognizes the value of creating an inclusive culture.

Recruitment is currently in progress for our highly-esteemed Executive Leadership Development Program which is produced in partnership with UCLA's Anderson Graduate School of Business.  And, another installment of our groundbreaking Leadership Seminar for managers and supervisors will be offered in Denver on September 17-18, 2009.

We're also striving to provide resources to our members who have been downsized. In this issue, we have asked NAMIC board director, Tracy Lawrence, who most recently was an executive recruiter at Russell Reynolds Associates, to share her keen knowledge of the recruiting process.  What's more, you can even email her with your career questions.

We hope that you find this helpful and we look to address more of your needs in future editions of InTouch.

Regards,

“Diversity Rules!” At The 23rd Annual NAMIC Conference
Facebook Co-Founder Chris Hughes to Deliver Keynote
Starz’s Robert B. Clasen to Be Honorary Chair

If the problem of the 20th century, as the noted scholar W.E.B. Du Bois famously predicted, was the problem of the color line, diversity may be the rule for the 21st century. Diversity may well be a precondition for success in mainstream America.  An African-American now serves as U.S. President. The casts of cable programs are more integrated than ever, contributing to the "beige-ing" of America's self-image. Companies have begun to recognize the "bottom-line wisdom" of corporate policies that value multicultural inclusion.  Multi-ethnicity is now an engine of change in a more fluid, richly-hued world.

In keeping with this latter-day wisdom, the theme of the 23rd Annual NAMIC Conference will be "Diversity Rules." Scheduled for October 26-28 at the Grand Hyatt Denver, for the first-time ever, the conference will be held outside New York City as the event becomes part of the inaugural Cable Connection - Fall that unites several industry meetings and events in a single location. Robert B. Clasen, chairman and CEO of  Denver-based Starz, LLC will serve as this year's honorary chair.

In keeping with the event's standard of excellence, the 23rd Annual NAMIC Conference will showcase a diverse line-up of business leaders sharing their perspectives on timely topics such as corporate diversity and inclusion, digital media, leadership development and multi-ethnic content/programming.  This will be the place to strategically network with the most diverse and brightest leaders in cable; to acquire effective practices for cultivating a diverse workforce and audience base; and to be at the forefront of the latest diversity research and trends.

"Businesses are becoming more global as American demographics continuously shift and technology breaks down cultural barriers," said Kathy Johnson, president of NAMIC. "This year's conference theme is a reflection on diversity as an irrefutable, winning strategy."

The conference is attracting some of the biggest names in business. Chris Hughes, co-founder of Facebook and founder of MyBarackObama.com, two of the most successful startups in business history, will deliver the opening keynote address.  At 25, Hughes has spent his brief career developing technologies to make social connections and political organizing easier.  He helped hatch Facebook from his dorm room at Harvard. Today, the site has 200 million users. His talent for connecting likeminded communities was further exemplified with his creation of My.BarackObama.com, the campaign apparatus that helped to elect Obama and revolutionize the web as a political tool. Hughes is a powerful speaker on technology and its potential to transform customer service, media and politics.

In addition to the 23rd Annual NAMIC Conference, other activities taking place during Cable Connection-Fall include the Association of Cable Communicators (ACC) FORUM and Beacon Awards, Cable Labs, the CTAM Summit, and the SCTE Cable-TEC Expo, the Cable Center Hall of Fame Dinner and the Walter Kaitz Foundation Annual Fundraising Dinner.

NAMIC Member Wins Vacation In Paradise

Sheena Anderson, Finance Manager for The Africa Channel, was the grand-prize winner of the Journey to Paradise Sweepstakes, an exclusive membership drive held by NAMIC in partnership with TuTV.  The vacation package for two is valued at $2,500 and includes airfare to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico and hotel accommodations at the Westin Resort & Spa for three days and two nights.

The membership drive also made NAMIC and TuTV winners - by driving traffic to both of their websites, increasing NAMIC membership and increasing NAMIC members' awareness of TuTV, a joint venture of Televisa and Univision created in 2002 to deliver five of the most popular TV channels in the Spanish-speaking world to U.S. cable and atellite operators.

NAMIC Hosts Spring 2009 Writers’ Workshop in Beverly Hills

As part of its ongoing focus on the creative/content development sides of the business, NAMIC hosted its Spring 2009 Writers' Workshop at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills on April 16-17.  Twenty aspiring writers were presented a unique opportunity to meet potential collaborators, hone their craft, and learn to create, package and sell a script, whether for a television drama, feature film or comedy for television or film.

The workshop, funded by the Walter Kaitz Foundation, was led by Carole Kirschner, Veteran Television Executive and Architect of the CBS Diversity Institute Writers' Mentoring Program and included guest speakers from the entertainment and new media industries.

According to one writer, among the most important lessons derived from the workshop were "a more complete grasp of story structure, the significance of networking, and the importance of trying my hand at writing in more than one medium."

Counting on You – NAMIC Becomes a 2010 Census Partner

NAMIC has become an official 2010 Census Partner, joining a national effort of public officials, nonprofit organizations, industry and community leaders across the nation in ensuring an accurate count for the nation’s Census, which is only one year away.

“Multicultural organizations like NAMIC have a vested interest in the accuracy of the US Census,” says Kathy A. Johnson, NAMIC President. “The federal government uses census numbers to allocate more than $300 billion in federal funds annually for community programs and services — from job training and education to health services. But industry too, including cable, rely on census data for demographic information, which they use to analyze markets, develop programming plans for mainstream and multicultural audiences, and seek out job applicants. At NAMIC, we plan to do our part to see that multi-ethnic groups are fully counted, and we want to engage local chapters and our partners in the industry to join the census effort.”

America is growing increasingly diverse, and Hispanic, black, Asian and other nonwhite residents now account for half the population of the nation’s largest cities, according to census figures.

Billions of dollars in federal funds are allocated annually for community programs and services in minority communities, based on census data. Government funds will also be allocated via federal agencies that use this data for building or boosting broadband capabilities in unserved and underserved communities across the country, and minority enterprises that train, employ and are run by multi-ethnic executives will have a shot at federal funds.

Johnson appointed a NAMIC liaison, Susan Waldman, Research and Publications Manager, to work closely with the New York Regional Census Center. She plans to engage NAMIC chapters in the census effort, and organize a national communications effort.

NAMIC Partners with Kaitz Foundation to Launch Master Class for Millennials

In an effort to build a talent pipeline to the communications industry, NAMIC and the Walter Kaitz Foundation launched an inaugural master class, Cable Cares About Diversity, for a select group of multi-ethnic college students, on April 2 in Washington DC.  The organizations developed the program, held in the Walter E. Washington Convention Center during Cable Connection-Spring, to give millennials a thorough overview of the cable industry, decipher current market trends and outline potential career paths.

More than 60 students, mostly from DC metro area colleges and universities, benefited from the master class, where they heard high-level cable executives and an impressive array of panelists deliver industry insights. The students - who are majoring in advertising, communications, radio/TV/film, law, marketing and human resources at Morgan State, Bowie State, Howard University and other institutions - heard presentations, had opportunities to grill CEOs on their successes and failures as business leaders, and networked with a diverse group of executives. The program included a tour as well as a luncheon designed to facilitate one-on-one interactions and promote networking with industry executives and a tour of the NCTA Cable Show exhibition.

In addition to industry luminaries such as Patrick Esser, President, Cox Communications; Johnathan Rodgers, President & CEO, TV One; and Evan Shapiro, President of IFC tv and Sundance Channel, who were in attendance, Congressman Artur Davis (D-AL) was on hand to give the attendees a Capital Hill warm welcome.

Participating companies included: AETN, AMC, BET Networks, Comcast, Cox Communications, Discovery Communications, The Independent Film Channel, Scripps Networks, Showtime Networks, The Sportsman Channel, Sundance Channel, Time Warner Cable, Travel Channel, TV One, and We TV.

Students were impressed with the Master Class as one of them related, "It exposed me to amazing aspects of the cable industry that I didn't know existed. I really loved meeting with upper-level management and getting a good sense of the cable industry as a whole."

What Does Your Resume Say About You?
By Tracy Lawrence

For most of us, the current economy is the worst we’ve seen in our lifetimes. But even in these tough times, there are jobs out there! The toughest part of job-hunting in today’s climate is breaking through the hundreds of applications to get an in-person interview, so that you have an opportunity to sell yourself. Your resume is the first thing prospective employers will see…so what does your resume say about you?

It’s important to take an objective look at your own resume to understand what others are seeing when they read it. Also, understand that in many cases, prospective employers will not spend more than a few minutes reviewing your resume, so first impressions really matter. Here are a few key things companies will look at when reading your resume:

  • Companies worked for Frequently, hiring managers will target employees from specific organizations that they feel have best mastered the issues they are facing. For example, if innovation is an issue, they will be interested in candidates from companies they consider to be more cutting-edge. The specific companies you have worked for can also be a strong indication of your cultural “fit” with the prospective organization.
  • Key accomplishments Use bullet points to show your key accomplishments under each job. Ultimately, you want to show how your department or company changed for the better as a result of your work. Be as specific as possible, and try to quantify your achievements (i.e., grew sales 10%). Don’t hesitate to tailor these comments to the specific job you are going for.
  • Career progression Does your resume demonstrate increasing responsibility over time? Promotions on the job show that your accomplishments were recognized by your coworkers. Lateral moves are fine, but ideally you want to show that you have made thoughtful decisions as you moved from one job to another.
  • Longevity in each role Length of time spent on each role is still one of the biggest factors companies look at in determining whether to bring a candidate in for an in-person interview. If your resume shows that you have worked for 7 different companies over a 7-year period, hiring managers frequently interpret this as a problem. At best, you can be seen as someone who lacks self-knowledge or self-awareness. At worst, a hiring manager will assume you lack certain basic skills and can’t keep a job. If you feel that your resume has this problem, you may want to focus more heavily on using relationships to get introductions rather than sending out your resume first. You may have a good explanation for your job transitions, but you will need to get a meeting in order to expand on this. Once you do get hired, you should seriously consider trying to stay with that company for at least 3-5 years to counteract the effects of the previous moves.

On the other hand, spending too much time at the same firm can also work against you. Candidates who remained at the same companies for 10 years or more often find that they face concerns that they are not dynamic enough or are too risk averse. The bottom line is that there is no magic number of years that you should stay at one company. However, as you make decisions to switch jobs, keep the long term in mind.

  • Awards and Recognition Participation in industry organizations and nonprofit work are another way to demonstrate leadership. Include any recognition, awards, etc. that you have earned. If you don’t have any, ask yourself why. Start thinking about ways to increase your role in the industry or in your community.
  • Education A strong education from a good university speaks well for you. If you have a great educational background, feature it prominently in your resume. A great education is an enhancement, but lack of one is rarely a deal killer if you have the right experience for the job. Professional education opportunities such as NAMIC’s EDLP program also show that you are committed to broadening your skills.

These are some of the most common ways professionals will evaluate your resume, but, of course, the specifics will change based on the circumstances. Many of us have had the experience of applying for a job with a specific set of criteria, only to find out that the person hired had an entirely different profile! Which brings us to the most important point of all…networking is key! If someone you know can deliver your resume to the hiring manager and put in a good word, this is by far the best way to present your qualifications. Maintain your professional relationships on an on-going basis, not just when you need a job.

What’s important in this process is to know yourself and your unique strengths. Your resume is a calling card, but it cannot begin to capture all that you have to offer.

Joan Baker’s “Secrets of Voice-Over Success”
NAMIC Member Divulges Secrets of Voice-Over Success in Her Book

Got a million dollar voice? Want to break into the voice-over field? A NAMIC member and a star voice-over artist wants to let you in on a few secrets to success – her own secrets and those of the superstars of the profession.

Joan Baker, a Voice-over Artist and Coach, has just put the finishing touches on the second edition of her book, “Secrets of Voice-Over Success: Top Voice-Over Artists Reveal How They Did It” (Sentient Publications, 2009). The book is a compendium of stories told by 21 highly successful professionals, people whose voices are instantly recognizable to millions of TV viewers, radio listeners and filmgoers. They share their insights, advice, and speak of their successes and failures.

A handbook for both novices and acting professionals alike, the book teaches everything an aspiring voice-over artist will need to know, from developing his or her talent to acquiring an agent to landing the first big gig. The book covers the history of voice-overs, and contains a glossary of terms.

Accompanying the book is an audio CD featuring the professional demo reels of each of the contributing voice-over artists. The CD allows you to hear first-hand what to aim for when producing a demo reel that will capture the imagination of the industry’s top agents and buyers.

Among the artists featured in the book and audio CD are Keith David, two-time Emmy Award winner and narrator of numerous Ken Burns’s documentaries, Steve Zirnkilton, opening narrator of the “Law & Order” series; and the granddaddy of all voice-over artists; Don LaFontaine. Perhaps the most prolific and successful voice-over artist in history, LaFontaine, who died last year, was the voice of 5,000 movie trailers and a half-million promos for TV and radio.

Baker, who taught voiceover at the Actors Institute in New York City and who coached the late Johnnie Cochran, is contributing all royalties from sales of the book to the Alzheimer’s Association. “The motivation for writing this book was my father, who had Alzheimer’s for 12 years before he died in September 2003,” Baker said.

For more information on the book, and to hear demos of the contributors, visit the “Secrets of Voice-Over Success” website at www.secretsofvo.com.

CHAPTER NEWS

NAMIC Across the Nation

NAMIC- Chicago

Bill Conway, VP, HR, Comcast, strikes a pose during NAMIC Chicago's first corporate runway show held at Alhambra Palace.

NAMIC fashionistas took center stage in May as more than 130 communications professionals attended NAMIC-Chicago's one-of-a-kind career development workshop, which doubled as both a networking event and fashion show featuring name brands that have won approval in boardrooms, work spaces and in front of TV cameras across the nation.

The event, entitled, "You Had Us at Hello: Networking and Image - Creating the Total Package," was held May 7 in Chicago's Alhambra Palace, an opulent, yet intimate dining and entertainment complex inspired by the 13th century fortress in Granada, Spain.

The "total package" included tips on how to strengthen networking skills, guidelines on how to "align your appearance with your career objectives," and cable professionals transformed into suave fashion models for an evening. Motivational Speaker and Author Dion Harding shared tips on building and maintaining a professional network, a particularly useful skill in the current economic climate. Kim Taylor, Certified Image Coach, then taught how to chose the right clothes and piece together a professional look.

"We wanted to do something different and creative," said NAMIC-Chicago President Carla Moore, Director, Affiliate Sales, North Central Region, HBO Services, Inc. "So we designed a workshop to help members sharpen their career networking skills and polish their professional image. People really seemed to enjoy it."

As models--mostly chapter members from Comcast--walked the runway, the announcer described their outfits, and also the models' jobs, to show how the choice of clothing suited their professional roles.

Commenting on the corporate runway show, Dino Magdos, Comcast VP for Tech Operations, said: "What a great idea! Next year I am sending my team to attend this event."
Bob Curtis, VP of Engineering for Comcast, said, "I was so inspired, I went out and bought a new suit."

The event was sponsored by Comcast, HBO, TLC, Essence and Macy's.

NAMIC-Houston

On May 14, NAMIC-Houston held its official chapter kickoff meeting and membership drive at Pappadeaux Seafood Kitchen in Houston. The 60 attendees got a chance to meet chapter officers, learn about its mission, goals and objectives for 2009.

“The purpose of the meeting was to introduce NAMIC-Houston and create greater awareness of NAMIC in the Houston area,” said Dale Elifrits, NAMIC-Houston President and Area VP of Comcast, who co-hosted the kickoff, along with Zinah Mineyahl, NAMIC-Houston VP and RVP of Customer Care for Comcast. The event was sponsored by Comcast, Houston.

“We are thrilled to be launching a NAMIC chapter in Houston,” added Tony Speller, SVP for the Comcast Houston Region, who was guest speaker at the event. “Our kickoff meeting was a huge success demonstrating that Houston embraces multi-ethnic diversity in our industry.  Houston-area members are really looking forward to all the networking and leadership development opportunities that NAMIC provides.”

“Since the event, 35 new members have joined our chapter,” Elifrits said.

NAMIC-New England

From left to right: Nicole Porter, Affiliate Marketing Coordinator, Disney & ESPN Networks and NAMIC-New England Secretary; James Brown, SVP, ESPN Rise and NAMIC Board Director; James Rollins, Account Executive, Disney & ESPN Networks and NAMIC-New England President.

NAMIC-New England held a spring mixer in April that put the renewed chapter back on the map. The venue was the banquet room at Sliders Grill and Bar in Plantsville, CT, a local sports-themed restaurant located six miles from the main ESPN campus.

Some 40 people were on hand to hear featured guest speaker James Brown, SVP of ESPN Rise.

Brown spoke about his career at ESPN and how NAMIC helped him achieve various milestones along the way. He touched on various NAMIC programs, including the Executive Leadership Development Program (ELDP), the L. Patrick Mellon Mentorship Program, the Annual NAMIC Conference, and local NAMIC events. He then answered questions.

The event was sponsored by Disney and ESPN Media Networks.

West Coast Creative Summit Helps Participants Sharpen Their Competitive Edge

During a great recession such as this, creativity matters. It can help you make a way out of no way, especially if you employ a “heat-seeking approach” to winning new business, and you fully realize that tough economic times call for a full measure of ingenuity rather than business-as-usual approaches.

This was certainly evident at the Beverly Hilton Hotel on April 17th — the date the 2009 West Coast Creative Summit and Vision Awards Luncheon took place. In fact, the theme of this year’s Creative Summit was “Business Not as Usual.”

The Summit, a highlight of NAMIC’s signature conference series, featured a morning power networking session, “Coffee and Connections,” in the Beverly Hills Ballroom. It was followed by three sets of concurrent breakout sessions. “Each speaker promised a pearl of wisdom, and each delivered,” said one attendee. Another said, “Overall, I really enjoyed the candor and real-life applications of these sessions.”

The presenting sponsor was Warner Bros. other sponsors included: A&E Television Networks, Disney/ESPN Media Networks, Disney/ABC Television Group, HBO and Time Warner Cable. Supporters were: ABC Studios, The Africa Channel, EBRU TV, FX Networks, Nickelodeon, Time Warner Cable and TV One.

ABC Studios, CNN and Time Warner Win Big at Annual Vision Awards

The 15th Annual Vision Awards were presented at a special luncheon ceremony held in conjunction with the Creative Summit. The event was hosted for the second consecutive year by Shaun Robinson, Weekend Co-Anchor and Correspondent for Access Hollywood.

The awards honor creators, networks and industry leaders for their commitment to producing multi-ethnic and culturally relevant original programming that reflects the rich tapestry of the nation’s population. ABC Studios, CNN and Time Warner Cable received two wins each to lead the 35 networks vying for honors. Entries were judged by a panel of industry professionals, who focused on overall imagery, sensitivity to cultural nuance, writing or acting.

The competition this year was particularly heavy.  Judges received 248 entries for 16 award categories. Eligible programs aired between October 1, 2007 and September 30, 2008.

Getting the Valley In the Mix

Judging from the mixers it organizes, NAMIC-Southern California loves networking. On May 28, NAMIC-Southern California sponsored an industry networking mixer at Wokcano in Burbank. The event was targeted to professionals working in the Burbank/Studio City/East LA area and included companies such as ABC, NBC Universal, Hallmark Channel, PBS, Disney, and The Africa Channel.

NAMIC-Western Pennsylvania

Take a cue from the sound of shattering glass ceilings across the nation. NAMIC-Western Pennsylvania sponsored “Women of Power,” at Comcast in Pittsburgh on May 21. Upwards of 40 people were on hand for the panel event, the first of its kind, to see and hear NAMIC chapter presidents come together to speak on the subjects of diversity and women’s leadership.

Rayna S. Smith, Corporate Escalations Specialist for Comcast and Programming and Events Committee Chair, served as moderator. Other panelists were Monica Pons, Treasurer of NAMIC-New York and Executive Director of Strategic Sourcing and Talent Acquisition for NBC Universal; Pamela Ford, Immediate Past President of NAMIC-Mid-Atlantic and Director of Communications, NCTA; Carla M. Moore, NAMIC-Chicago President and Regional Director of Affiliate Sales for HBO Services; Barbara Gee, NAMIC-Philadelphia President and VP for Strategic Sales Alliances, Comcast Cable.

Comcast sponsored the event.

PEOPLE

Q&A with James Rollins
President, NAMIC-New England,
Account Executive, Disney and ESPN Media Networks, Affiliate Sales & Marketing

Give us the broad strokes of your career path.

Before I worked in communications, I was an officer in the Navy for several years. When I decided to end my military career, I went back to school and got an international MBA degree from the Moore School of Business at the University of South Carolina. It was actually while I was transitioning from the military that I got my foot in the door in cable television. I had an opportunity to intern for Turner Broadcasting Latin America in Mexico City and that’s where I learned affiliate and distribution sales, which is what I do today.

It was a great opportunity because it gave me the building blocks to understand the industry, and it was a great transition because my military background helped me with the cultural challenges of living in Mexico City and dealing with the language barriers. I also think the core principles in the military of accountability, responsibility, teamwork and having to make smart decisions under pressure were things I was able to take with me when I transitioned into communications.

When I finished my internship and my MBA, I had the opportunity to work at Disney and ESPN Media Networks in their affiliate sales and marketing group. Today, I manage relationships with various affiliates in the mid-Atlantic area, educating them and informing them of new initiatives and products.

Why did you join NAMIC?

I identified with its mission of diversity and empowering folks in the communications industry from various ethnic groups. Being someone who’s multicultural — my father’s African American and my mother is originally from Colombia and I speak Spanish fluently — I felt their mission of empowering multiethnic diversity ties into who I am and also to what I’ve done in the past: my international experiences in the military and my international experience for Turner.

What were your goals for NAMIC-New England this year?

There were resources available, so I could revitalize the chapter in this area. I reached out to NAMIC national and took up the challenge of jumpstarting the chapter again, which I began to do with a strong board of folks from Disney and ESPN Media Networks and local media affiliates.

Once we put together a board, we developed a game plan of what we’d like to do for the rest of the year. We created a two-pronged strategy: Number one, we wanted to create awareness and let people know that NAMIC-New England is back. It’s going to be stronger than ever, and we wanted to let people know we were going to bring value to the NAMIC members in the area. Number two, we wanted to build the numbers again, by bringing value, by creating various events for our folks here. Currently we have about 35 members. Our goal for this year is to double our membership, and we’re working toward that.

How has NAMIC helped you?

I think that NAMIC is one of those organizations that provides people with industry intelligence, and especially now, during tough economic times, it’s more valuable than it ever was before. You need it now to differentiate yourself. You gain industry intelligence through NAMIC's various events, conferences, seminars, networking opportunities, mentoring opportunities. But to gain industry intelligence, you need to know what resources you can tap. Right now, it’s all about awareness, getting the word out that NAMIC-New England is back and that we’re an active chapter.
