Observations – Kathy - ELDP Class X Recruitment

Accepting nominations for Class X of the NAMIC Executive Leadership Development Program.
We encourage you to nominate candidates from your company for this prestigious opportunity. While you may be familiar with other executive development programs in our industry, the NAMIC Executive Leadership Development Program (ELDP) is unique in its focus on both men and women of color. It is designed to help solve some of the industry’s most persistent diversity challenges: increasing the diversity of the industry’s executive suites, retention of executives of color; and maximizing the ROI of a diverse workforce in a competitive global economy. To-date, nearly 300 executives have completed ELDP.
The ELDP is targeted to upper-middle level executives of color whose performance and potential point them toward future senior executive positions. Designed to meet several important goals, the program will:
- Help identify and nurture high-potential executives of color;
- Build and strengthen their skills, preparing them for promotion to more senior positions;
- Provide useful tools to help them meet the unique challenges that confront people of color in business today; and
- Assist industry companies’ retention efforts for executives of color.
Class X of the four-session ELDP launches in October, 2010, and concludes in April, 2011. The University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) Anderson Graduate School of Management, one of the nation’s foremost business schools, is NAMIC’s academic partner for ELDP. We are very excited about our partnership with UCLA, particularly because Anderson is a pioneer in the area of executive development programs directed at specific culture groups. A faculty of eminent, nationally renowned scholars will again facilitate the learning. They will be joined by industry leaders contributing their unique perspectives on the practical issues of remaining viable in this highly competitive and volatile business milieu.
The ideal candidate for NAMIC’s Executive Leadership Development Program fits the following profile:
- A minimum of two years at the director level and above;
- A superior performer;
- On track for promotion or identified in the company’s formal succession plan;
- Aspires to a senior-level executive position within the industry;
- Able to compellingly articulate how the experience of being a person of color has strengthened the resolve to continue to develop his/her leadership acumen;
- Endorsed by senior management for participation in ELDP.
The ELDP sessions will take place on the UCLA campus in Los Angeles during the following time frames:
Session I: October 12, 2010 – October 15, 2010
Session II: December 8, 2010 – December 10, 2010
Session III: February 9, 2011 – February 11, 2011
Session IV: April 20, 2011 – April 22, 2011
Applications for ELDP are due no later than Friday, August 6, 2010. Please click here for more information and an application

Q&A with Zinah Mineyahl, vice president, Customer Care, Comcast; NAMIC-Houston President and ELDP Class VIII Alumnus
Congratulations to NAMIC-Houston for winning the event management award at the 2010 Chapter Leadership Forum. Can you share insights on how you go about planning chapter events?
I think the Houston chapter was fortunate to win this award and we are grateful for it. I can share what we did in hopes others can learn from our experience. There are several reasons why we won. One key step is learning the needs of your community. We always have to keep in mind who, and how many people could benefit from an event. Houston and its surrounding area never had the presence of NAMIC or anything like it. The lack of such an organization to meet the needs of the community has made it easier for us to offer the events we had in 2009 and they were well received. Another reason is learning best practices from other chapters. The networking NAMIC creates at the NAMIC Chapter Leadership Forum and the NAMIC website make it easy to see what other chapters have done and what was most beneficial to the community. Brainstorming with officers of the chapter and committee members is another important method of deciding what should be done. This gets everyone involved. It is great to see how eager people are to make a difference. It feels good to see how the creative juice flows when we get together to talk about how we can give back and advance our community. The exercise alone is very satisfying. The final ingredient is working together as a team of chapter officers and committee chairs to plan and execute. If there is a lack of unity, it becomes very hard and discouraging to even do the smallest events. Event by event, the chapter is tested and goes through its growing process.
You also went through NAMIC’s Executive Leadership Development Program (ELDP), how did that impact your career? How has it impacted you in leading the chapter?
The ELDP experience was profound. For me ELDP falls in three key categories. The classes, the assignment, and my classmates. In the classroom, you have outstanding professors, with subjects that are applicable, and classmates who have various levels of background in the several areas of our industry. Our daily struggles as minority leaders in our industry was not a topic that you ignore. In fact, we had the opportunity to discuss our trials and tribulations that you would find hard to discuss in a business setting in the USA. We had both professors and students that came from all walks of life. The experiences that I thought were only unique to me were similar to others. It was great to know we can openly discuss the racial issues that continue to plague our country. The subjects we covered from accounting, marketing, operations, strategy, leadership and the reading assignments were excellent. Outside class we were given assignments. My ELDP classmates are like distant cousins. I can reach out to anyone of them and feel comfortable to talk to them about insight, advice, or ideas. It is a life long gift that you would not find from any other setting in a learning environment.
How has your involvement with NAMIC helped you grow in your career and your life?
The very existence of NAMIC and the role it plays has always intrigued me. As great as this country is, it is unfortunate that several segments of the whole US population has been put at a great disadvantage and continues to face inequality. Regardless of any political affiliation, the Obama election was a symbolic and practical confirmation that attitudes are changing and this country is embracing diversity more than ever. This is a good sign, however, these changes are very small compared to the damages that have been done historically. NAMIC plays a role in our industry to do something about helping advance the cause of minorities who long for further career advancement based on their capabilities. We have an organization that has created a forum to advance diversity in the telecommunications industry. Therefore, I feel good to know that I can be part of it and do something, rather than being disappointed why society is what it is. I feel good knowing that I can make a difference and be part of a solution.
My career and my life are intertwined. My personal growth in one area is growth in the other. NAMIC is about giving back to our community. I am fortunate and had many helping hands in getting at my current level. I strive each day to help others learn from my career success and to inspire those that look up to me to follow my example. In the work place, I like to reflect on how I go about spending my day. As a leader I ask myself how I can help others realize the opportunities before them rather than complain about their misfortunes. I see at times how people do not fully exploit their full potential. In every opportunity, I find ways to point that out and help people see the light at the end of the tunnel.
