Is NAMIC On Your Holiday Gift List?

Sustain the Work of NAMIC.  Make a Personal Contribution Today.

The impact of our country’s current economic climate has spared no business, including those in our industry, and it is in times like these that the work of NAMIC is even more important.

We must ensure that our industry continues to keep multi-ethnic diversity and inclusion at the forefront and, we must also ensure that our members continue to have access to professional development and networking opportunities that will keep them gainfully employed for years to come.  In order to achieve these goals, we ask that you continue the tradition of personal support of the NAMIC Foundation.

The coming year promises to be another one of growth for NAMIC, but we know it will be even more challenging to secure financial resources given the enormity of industry budget cuts.  With your support, we can maintain our national leadership development and mentoring programs; continue to grow our Annual Conference and Awards Breakfast; support our local chapters; grow our membership; continue to be an invaluable resource to our industry; and so much more.

NAMIC recognizes that these are hard times for everyone, but members and supporters are encouraged to make a contribution within their means. Contributions of all amounts are welcome.

Click here to download a contribution form.

Make the amount of your personal contribution to the NAMIC Foundation go further.  If your employer has a matching gifts program, just follow this simple formula:

Your personal contribution + a matching gift from your employer = more money for NAMIC!

All you have to do to match your gift by your employer is forward the appropriate paperwork to NAMIC to process.

Contributions to the NAMIC Foundation are tax-deductible to the extent allowable by law and will be acknowledged for tax purposes.  Contributions made by December 31, 2008 can be deducted as charitable gift on your 2008 income tax-return.

Please feel free to contact Danny McGlone, NAMIC’s Vice President of Fund Development at (212) 594-5985, ext. 13 or danny.mcglone@namic.com should you have any questions about making a year-end charitable contribution.

NAMIC Celebrates National Philanthropy Day and Honors Scripps Networks

At a luncheon held on November 17th at Cipriani in New York City, the Association of Fundraising Professionals – Greater New York Chapter observed National Philanthropy Day. NAMIC participated by honoring Scripps Networks.  NAMIC was one of 15 organizations who honored a donor or volunteer for their philanthropic contributions or gift of time.

The featured speaker was Malaak Compton-Rock, Activist, Philanthropist, and Founder, The Angel Rock Project, who enlightened the sold-out audience during a discussion with ABC News Correspondent Deborah Roberts.  Ms. Compton-Rock discussed her commitment to philanthropy from her first job in the nonprofit sector at the U.S. Fund for UNICEF to the formation of The Angel Rock Foundation, which serves as a pathway for those seeking pertinent information on how to lead a life of service.

NAMIC honored Scripps for being engaged, involved and supportive of the organization. Scripps was also acknowledged for their commitment to diversity, which is pervasive in everything they do from the people they hire to the programming they create to the vendors they do business with.

This was the fourth consecutive year that NAMIC participated in National Philanthropy Day.  Corporate donors that NAMIC has previously honored include BET Networks (2007), Lifetime Networks (2006) and MTV Networks (2005).  NAMIC’s Vice President for Fund Development, Danny McGlone, served on the National Philanthropy Day Committee that planned the luncheon.

Membership Spotlight

Member of the Month: Helen Miranda Smith

NAMIC-South Florida President
Regional VP, Human Resources
Comcast Cable

How long have you been a NAMIC member? Three years.

Why did you decide to join NAMIC?  I was excited about the development opportunities and the focus on multi-ethnicity.

What is the most valuable benefit of being a NAMIC member?  I was most fortunate to participate in NAMIC’s Executive Leadership Development Program (ELDP).  ELDP was a wonderful opportunity both professionally and personally.  It provided an opportunity to build my network outside of my comfort zone. I will remember my classmates for a very long time.

How are you involved with/engaged in NAMIC? I am currently the NAMIC-South Florida President.

Tell us a little about your position at Comcast Cable?  I am the Region VP of Human Resources for the South Florida Region of Comcast.  We have 2,500 employees in the South Florida Region.  My team and I work closely with our functional partners in developing our employees, focusing on organization development, workforce planning/recruitment, and having effective employee relations.

What lead you to seek a career in the communications industry?  The cable industry has no boundaries or walls. There is an unlimited opportunity for career enhancement.

How has the industry evolved since you entered it?  In the last 13 years, internet service, digital, on demand, and other great products have been introduced to our customers.  Comcast has been in front of offering exciting products and services to our customers.  It has been a great experience to work with people who are talented and have a commitment to the technology and customer service.

What’s the one thing about you that’s not on your resume that you are willing to share with other members of NAMIC?  I love entertainment (movies, programming, and books).  I am definitely in the right industry!

Favorite Quote or Personal Motto:  Martin Luther King’s “I have a dream.”  I find the speech extremely inspirational.
